Miramar runs from 1950s ranches to the Everglades
Miramar is a long, narrow city and its reptile problem changes as you drive west. East of the Turnpike, Miramar Isles is 1950s–60s Spanish-Revival ranch homes with kidney-shaped pools, mature hedges, and porch lights — gecko, anole, and Cuban tree frog territory, with cane toads coming up from the Snake Creek Canal (the C-9) that forms the city's southern boundary. West of I-75, the city becomes gated lake communities built in the 1990s and 2000s: Silver Lakes, Sunset Lakes on Lake Sunset Falls, Riviera Isles on Lake Riviera, Monarch Lakes, Nautica, Silver Shores, Huntington, and Harbour Lake Estates. Nearly every lot backs a retention lake and nearly every home has a screened pool. The city limits reach half a mile past US-27 to the edge of Water Conservation Area 3.
What shows up where
Lake communities: the retention lakes breed cane toads and Cuban tree frogs in numbers. Toads come up after rain, sit on the pool deck, under landscape lights, and by the dog bowl; they are toxic to dogs. Tree frogs sit on the lit lanai screen and pack into the pump housing. Green iguanas sun on the lake bank, burrow into it, and strip the hibiscus on the way to the pool — after the February 2026 cold snap, the FWC office in Broward took in more than a thousand stunned iguanas in a day, many from the west-Broward lake cities.
Western edge: a landscaper was bitten by a water moccasin at a Miramar community off SW 160th Avenue in 2017, and pythons reach neighborhoods on this side of the county by following the canals in from the Everglades. Homes bordering Miramar Pineland — 157 acres of flatwoods and restored wetland on University Drive with coachwhips, glass lizards, and many iguanas — and Snake Warrior's Island Natural Area get snakes in the mulch after storms. Country Club Ranches' large lots see the same.
Where to lay the band in Miramar
Lake homes (Silver Lakes, Sunset Lakes, Riviera Isles, Monarch Lakes, Nautica): a continuous band along the top of the lake bank, the outside footer of the pool cage, the lake-facing hedge, and a ring around each low landscape light and the pool-equipment pad. Miramar Isles: the foundation line, the pool-deck edge, the porch steps, and the C-9 canal bank if you are on it. Preserve-edge and US-27 lots: the fence line facing the wetland, wood piles, and the mulch beds against the house.
Miramar is about 18 miles southwest of our Fort Lauderdale base, on the same route as Pembroke Pines. A lake lot in Riviera Isles or Sunset Lakes is usually a 32 oz job; an HOA that wants a shared lake bank treated, or a Country Club Ranches lot, is the 5-gal bucket.
A barrier you control, from five ingredients you can read.
ReptilesAway is a granular powder, not a spray, made from five ingredients — sodium chloride, citric acid, lemongrass oil, peppermint oil, and garlic oil — and formulated as an EPA FIFRA 25(b) minimum-risk pesticide — made only from ingredients on the EPA's minimum-risk list, so it is exempt from federal registration. One application lasts 2–3 weeks. The 32 oz bag is $24.99 and covers 1,500 sq ft; the 5-gal bucket is $164.99 and covers 30,000 sq ft. Made with food-grade and botanical ingredients. As with any product, keep pets from eating it directly and check the ingredient list if your pet has known sensitivities to any of them. Local treatment is priced by quote with no contracts — call 1-833-8REPTILES (1-833-873-7845).

Three steps. You run them.
Find the travel lines
Walk your Miramar property and flag the routes reptiles use — lake banks, canal banks, pool-cage edges, the gaps under a gate.
Lay the band
Shake a three-foot band of powder along those lines. No spray, no fogger, nothing to dry — fine around the pool and patio.
Reapply on schedule
One pass lasts two to three weeks. Reapply after a heavy rain or every couple of weeks through the long iguana season.
Questions about Miramar.
Baby toads cover our Sunset Lakes pool deck after every storm. Does a repellent help?
It helps most if the band is already down before the emergence. Keep a continuous band along the outside footer of the pool cage and the lake-facing hedge through wet season, and ring the landscape lights toads gather under. Skim the pool and check the skimmer basket, and keep dogs away from any toad.
Can our Silver Lakes HOA have the common lake banks treated?
Yes. We walk the bank with the manager, mark the sunning spots and the hedge lines iguanas use to reach homes, and send a per-visit quote for a single treatment or a recurring schedule with no annual contract. Common-area banks usually take the 5-gal bucket.
We back onto Miramar Pineland and see snakes in the mulch after rain. Is this the right tool?
For keeping them from settling in beds and along the house, yes — treat the fence line on the preserve side, wood piles, and the mulch beds against the foundation. It is a repellent, not a removal service. If you see a water moccasin or a python in the open, keep pets away and call a licensed trapper.
Take back your Miramar yard.
From Silver Lakes to the Everglades edge, the fix is the same: a granular line where the reptiles travel. Run it yourself, or let our crew handle the whole thing.
